Information about the book

Al-Kafi by Imam Ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi (d. 620 AH) is one of the foundational works of the Hanbali school of jurisprudence and was written by one of its most influential scholars. It serves as a comprehensive textbook, presenting the accepted legal rulings of the madhhab clearly, concisely, and systematically, without lengthy arguments or controversial discussions, making it particularly suitable for memorization and structured instruction.
The book covers the entire spectrum of fiqh topics – from acts of worship and transactions to personal status law, the judiciary, and criminal law – and summarizes the key (muʿtamad) positions of the Hanbali school. In terms of content, it stands between Ibn Qudamah's shorter work ʿUmdat al-Fiqh and his extensive al-Mughni, thus representing the balanced middle stage of his legal scholarship.

Nuʿaym b. Ḥammād reported:
It was once said to ʿAbdullah b. al-Mubārak:
“O Abū ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān, you often sit alone at home.”
He replied:
“Am I alone? I am with the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – and with his companions.”

This refers to the reading of the Hadiths.

Narrated by Ibn ʿAsākir in Tārīḫ Dimašq, Volume 32, page 458.
