Information about the book

Radd ʿalā al-Jahmiyyah is a classic work by Imām ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd ad-Dārimī, in which he presents the fundamental positions of the Jahmiyyah and refutes them from the perspective of the Salaf. The book addresses central topics such as the attributes of Allah, Īmān (the faith), the Qurʾān, and the question of the creation of deeds.

Ad-Dārimī bases his work on the Qurʾān, Sunnah, and the statements of early scholars. He demonstrates how the Salaf understood the relevant texts and how they responded to the arguments of the Jahmiyyah. The work is simply structured and employs clear evidence, without kalam or philosophical approaches.

In terms of content, this book belongs to the early sources that record the attitude of Ahl as-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah towards theological innovations and document how the first scholars dealt with dissenting opinions.

Nuʿaym b. Ḥammād reported:
It was once said to ʿAbdullah b. al-Mubārak:
“O Abū ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān, you often sit alone at home.”
He replied:
“Am I alone? I am with the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – and with his companions.”

This refers to the reading of the Hadiths.

Narrated by Ibn ʿAsākir in Tārīḫ Dimašq, Volume 32, page 458.
