This book is among the important works of Ahl as-Sunnah, in which the doubts of the Jahmiyya regarding Tawhid, as well as the names and attributes of God, are refuted. The author, Imam ʿUthman ibn Saʿid ad-Darimi (d. 280 AH), presents the approach of the Salaf and defends the doctrine of Ahl as-Sunnah wa-l-Jamaʿa against the teachings of the Kalām schools.

Nuʿaym b. Ḥammād reported:
It was once said to ʿAbdullah b. al-Mubārak:
“O Abū ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān, you often sit alone at home.”
He replied:
“Am I alone? I am with the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – and with his companions.”

This refers to the reading of the Hadiths.
