Information about the book

Dham al-Kalām is one of the most important classical works that clearly and systematically presents the early stance of the Salaf towards speculative Kalām. In it, Imām al-Harawī compiles numerous narrations, statements, and opinions of the first scholars who warned against the introduction of philosophical argumentation into ʿAqīdah (Islamic creed). The book offers a concise and reliable insight into the original methodology of the Salaf—adherence to the Qurʾān and Sunnah, without Taʾwīl (scientific analysis), without Taʿṭīl (intellectual analysis), and without the terminology of the Kalām schools.

The work demonstrates, in clearly structured sections:

the danger of Kalam and its effects,

the attitude of the early Imams towards the Jahmiyyah, Muʿtazilah and other innovations,

the benefits of adhering to the Sunnah,

and the principles by which the Salaf preserved the faith.

Dham al-Kalām is considered a foundational text that preserves the authentic theological purity of the early generations and provides students with direct access to their statements. It is a valuable and indispensable work for all who wish to study the ʿAqīdah of the Salaf aṣ-Ṣāliḥīn in a well-founded manner, free from later influence.

Nuʿaym b. Ḥammād reported:
It was once said to ʿAbdullah b. al-Mubārak:
“O Abū ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān, you often sit alone at home.”
He replied:
“Am I alone? I am with the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – and with his companions.”

This refers to the reading of the Hadiths.

Narrated by Ibn ʿAsākir in Tārīḫ Dimašq, Volume 32, page 458.
